Module 3 Expectations

Module 3: How can we automate an assay for speed and reproducibility? In this quest, we will define microfluidics, screening center, liquid handler, and virtual screening. We will compare and contrast the use of a liquid handler and manual pipetting in several situations. Our focus will be on the technology and software used to automate and analyze results from high-throughput approaches. This module ends with the second JoVE scenario we will analyze in the forum that is directly related to your group projects.

Based on student feedback, we will begin to archive a community-sources glossary of terminology from our course. Please work as a community to compile and define key terms in our Community Glossary and Notes which can also be found at the top of our Moodle course page.

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Define the following terms: microfluidics, screening center, liquid handler, virtual screening. (CO 1)
  2. List the advantages and disadvantages of using a liquid handler (i.e., robot), and determine when its use is appropriate. (CO 5)
  3. State the steps at which software is used, and list appropriate examples. (CO 2)

Assignments to complete:

  • Watch, listen or read Module 3: how can we automate speed for reproducibility
  • Post to Forum 3: JoVE article about the use of robotics for nucleic acid extractions.
    • Be sure to respond to another student’s post with appreciation or curiosity!
  • Complete the JoVE Critical Thinking Scenario for Module 3
  • Complete the Module 3 Comprehension Check
  • Attend Lab Session 3 to complete Lab Project Task 3
  • Rank Lab Topic Interests by completing this Google Form to complete Lab Project Task 4.
