Week 6: Why we need high-throughput sequencing approaches

Good afternoon!

This week we dive into why we need high-throughput sequencing approaches and we will apply HT sequencing approaches to answer research questions. As always, reach out if you have any questions or concerns including requests to meet with your instructors!

Overview

What will you learn about?

Why do we need HT approaches? In this module, we discuss considerations for high-throughput sequencing libraries that enable us to generate genomic sequences without prior knowledge of their sequence data. We will focus on the PCR-based technologies that allow us to apply various approaches, their limitations, and validation. The case study for this module asks us to help Dr. S solve an 80-year-old mystery and will help us understand why we truly need HT approaches to genetic sequencing. The learning objectives for this module include identifying relevant literature and resources that can aid in the experimental design of assays using high-throughput sequencing approaches.

Why are you learning this?

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify relevant literature and resources to aid in an experimental design featuring high-throughput approaches. (CO 1, 2, 6)
  2. Describe several of the pros and cons of using high-throughput approaches as part of an experimental design. (CO 4)
  3. Explain how high-throughput technologies are necessary to generate data and findings to promote discovery. (CO 5)

How will you learn this?

You will achieve these Module Objectives as you:

  • Complete the case study by answering Comprehension Check questions for Module 6
  • Participate in the Module 6 forum
  • Complete Task 8 for Lab Project: Submit a Google Drive link storing all raw video footage.
  • Review your Peer Feedback for your Lab Project and make improvements to your work from these additional perspectives! Final Projects are due on Monday, April 24th!
