HTD Week 1 Updates: Module 0 and Module 1 begin today!

Hello students!

Welcome to our asynchronous online course BIT 479/579 HTD!

Module 0: Start Here! and Module 1: What is High-Throughput Discovery Science begin today! These are both designed so that we can learn more about you and you can learn about the course! Your goal is to complete all the tasks within these Modules by midnight on Friday, January 14. Assignments are always due each week by Friday at midnight, but you can always request a grace period until Monday if you email us (check out our late work policy in our syllabus). The Module objectives that are shared below!

Our Moodle site may be different than what you have seen in other courses. We want to first get to know you and share where to find tools and resources on the course website.  You’ll notice that we use audio and video throughout the course to communicate with you and encourage community. We may use the new Panopto content capture system for video versions of announcements and updates. You too can post using rich media (video, audio, links, photos). This is not a requirement; it’s one of many options we wish to provide to kindle your interest in the topics and motivation to learn more!

Module 0: Start Here!

The course orientation is designed to help you become familiar with the course expectations and your classmates, as well as give you an opportunity to practice using Moodle, the Learning Management System (LMS) we will use for our course. Please review and complete all activities in the ‘Start Here’ section. Activity completion is indicated when the box to the right has a checkmark. 4. Summarize the course goals in your own words.

  5. List one resource you will use to successfully engage with others (including the instructors) in this course.

Module 1: What is High-throughput (HT) Discovery Science?

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Define high-throughput or high-content screening/discovery, phenotypic cell-based screen, lead-like properties, and hit rate. (CO 1)

  2. List three applications of high-throughput screening. (CO 1)

  3. Discuss and evaluate several myths about HTS. (CO 1)
